“I think we should cancel…” I said, with my voice trailing off. As if the word "cancel" meant the pain would end.

I knew it wouldn’t. But I worked so hard with so little to show. I had just 2 registrations. One of my friends, the only one who noticed, made fun of the poster. So I stopped handing them out. I just wanted the embarrassment to stop. "How many people you got", my dad kept asking?

But I was most scared of the shame. Of pouring my heart into something, throwing a big yoga retreat, for only 2 people to show. Then they would feel awkward too. The few that trusted me, would question “was that a mistake?"

I desperately wanted it to end. I had no guide, no marketing, and no training. My venue had no chef. It was no wonder I was in trouble. Retreats aren't easy.

My co-host Markus stepped up. He was wiser. He saw through the fear. He said “Hargobind, if we turn back from Tulum now, you may never return.” He wasn't worried about him. He was worried about me. Tulum had already stolen his heart. He knew how special it could be. He implored me to keep the faith. So we continued on.

We ended up getting 7 clients. Everyone loved it but I stressed so much. It almost never happened.

I was thinking about this today. I just had 25 people with me for the best new years retreat ever.

I had a moment of pride as I reflected on how far I've come. On the lessons in real estate, marketing, leadership, and teaching since that first retreat in Tulum in 2010. And I realized something bigger.
